CCLD (Center for Conscious Living & Dying) believes that tending to one another in our final days is an intrinsic part of our humanity. This program is designed to help us remember a time-honored approach to companioning each other—and ourselves—through the dying process, a tradition so old, it feels refreshingly new. This program brings love, wholeness, and deep witnessing not only to the last breath the body takes but also to the little “deaths” in life along the way.

By remembering how to serve at the bedside, we enhance our ability to live consciously, holding up a mirror to our own lives. In turn, living consciously enriches our capacity to serve those at the bedside. This reciprocal experience invites you to cultivate a meaningful relationship with death so you can live more fully now.

CCLD’s End of Life Doula Program equips you with valuable knowledge for assisting people through the dying process, after-death care, and grief support. In this program, you learn the many dimensions of providing compassionate care at the end of life, including an emphasis on personal and collective healing. The course has three components: live online classes, an in-person retreat, and an internship at CCLD.

Live Online Classes

The online portion of the program is not just about learning; it's about personal transformation. Over the eight-week curriculum, with weekly two-hour live Zoom calls, students connect deeply with themselves and one another. The emphasis is on personal transformation and inner healing, preparing them to become a grounded, aware, and present witness to those in their dying season. Each online module contains written content, video and audio resources, along with reflection questions to integrate the material presented. Live Zoom calls provide discussion and application of the weekly content through exercises and breakout groups.

Three-Day Retreat Weekend

Prior to the bedside apprenticeship, students participate in a three-day retreat together. This retreat is a deeply healing and connective experience that includes both didactic and experiential practices. The focus is cultivating self-awareness through contemplative practices, building connection and trust as a doula group, engaging in conversations about the community-supported end-of-life care movement, and exploring conscious dying practices. The retreat also features end-of-life simulations and a grief ritual accompanied by musicians.

The Six-Day Internship Program

Following your retreat, you embark on a unique hands-on experience as an apprentice to residents in their dying season at CCLD. As apprentices, doula students serve at the bedside, learning from volunteers and a doula program mentor. Students rotate through a schedule of “turn times” throughout the week, allowing for a comprehensive and immersive experience. This structure enables you to observe, participate in, and converse with volunteers and mentors at the bedside through various end-of-life care experiences.

In the past, students have experienced after-death ritual baths, anointing rituals, the last breath of residents, and much more. Daily debrief sessions, or “integration circles,” provide an opportunity to process everything learned and experienced—both seen and unseen, practical and emotional, and more subtle or energetic experiences.

The apprenticeship program is distinctly self-directed, encouraging students to facilitate their own learning experience by asking questions about the aspects of end-of-life care that interest them most. This immersive apprenticeship week ensures you gain more than practical skills; you learn how to “be” in most situations and lovingly hold space for this sacred end-of-life journey.

This is a deeply experiential program that does not focus on business development or the logistics of creating a doula business. Each week of apprenticeship varies based on the number of residents at CCLD, their current stage in the dying process, and the level of care needed. Some residents may be imminently and actively dying, while others may have just arrived and are still ambulatory, eating and drinking. Join us with curiosity and an openness to the mystery!

“The CCLD Doulas program has changed my perspective on what it means to be a Doula and how I want to run and build my practice. I would suggest to anyone who feels drawn toward end-of-life work to take the program.”
